What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy has different meanings for different people: a beauty treatment, a kind of massage, therapy that smells good, or an effective treatment for all sorts of health problems. The word aromatherapy simply means treatment with the use of fragrance.
Reasearch has shown that essential oils:
- often have antiseptic qualities,
- can increase the sedative effect of a massage,
- show anti-inflammatory, digestive, sedative and pain-relieving properties,
- can be absorbed into the bloodstream by inhalation and application.
What are Essential Oil?
Essential oils are concentrated essences extracted from flowers, leaves, seeds, roots, bark, wood, fruit, spices and herbs. Extraction is generally done by steam distillation. They are diluted by being mixed with base oil and should not be applied directly to the skin.
They can be absorbed through the skin in small amounts, but when massaged most of the molecules of 'aroma' disperse in to the air and affect us through smell.
Once you have had a full consultation with your therapist, oils will be chosen specifically to match you and may help with any particular problem which may be troubling you. A few drops of essential oil will then be mixed with a base oil for your massage treatment.
